Would You rather be Hungry Or Homeless?
Hungry
Homeless
Are you aware that some young people face the tough decision between hunger and homelessness? It's easy to overlook the fact that we are fortunate not to have to make that choice. Take a moment to reflect on this:
Imagine you are 14 years old and have run away from home due to your mother's drug addiction and an abusive stepfather. You feel trapped and have been attempting to seek help by acting out in school, getting in trouble with the law, and joining a gang in search of a sense of belonging. Now, at 14 years old, you have no job, no money, no car, and no place to call home. You stumble upon $50 on the ground. Faced with the choice of either getting a hotel room for one night or having about three days' worth of food, what would you choose? (Note: The cheapest hotel in Durham on a Monday night in March costs $77, but for this scenario, let's assume you found one for $50 on this particular night).
It's challenging for us to make decisions, so imagine the difficulty a 14-year-old child faces. Every day, there are homeless children on the streets who must make these tough choices. Some are fortunate to receive free lunches or meals from friends at school. However, they may worry about returning to a home where abuse awaits if they ask for help. Now, a new dilemma arises – should they seek help or persevere through the day?
This fundraiser marks the beginning of our efforts. We are seeking donations to establish an emergency shelter for at-risk youth in need of guidance. You may not have encountered this situation before, but now you are presented with a decision. Will you offer your assistance?
